A rich source of fossils and other natural objects that provide insight into the ecology of the Eocene Epoch that took place some 50 million years ago, Fossil Butte National Monument protects the land where Fossil Lake once stood. The lake attracted a variety of organisms, some of whose fossils can now be found buried beneath the park's surface. At the visitor center, see over 80 different fossils that have been extracted from the park and learn about the once-fertile nature of this area. There are two hiking trails, with round trip distances running 1.5 miles long and 2.5 miles long, that offer a chance to explore a bit of the park, but for the most part it's the displays at the center which are the most interesting feature of this park. This park is quite isolated at its location, a 45-mile drive north of I-80 and only about 15 miles from the Utah state border.
Park open daily sunrise - sunset. Visitor center open daily Memorial Day - Labor Day: 8:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.; Labor Day - Memorial Day: 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Free.
